Kayak Fishing 101
Welcome to our beginner kayak fishing course! This course will teach you how to safely and effectively fish from a kayak. This course is designed for kayakers or anglers wanting to combine the two skills or someone new to both.
Day 1 (May 5th, 6:00pm- 8:30pm, KDFWR classroom)
This portion covers basic concepts including, but not limited to: kayak safety, types of lifejackets, types of watercraft and their features, paddle techniques, navigation of flowing water systems, boat ramp and waterway etiquette, fish identification, biology, fish habitat, equipment, conservation, improving water quality, licensing and regulations.
Day 2 (May 12th, 6:00pm- 830pm, KDFWR classroom)
The practical portion includes: loading and unloading a kayak trailer, propelling and steering a kayak, weight distribution, how to secure gear, boat positioning for fishing and navigation of flowing water systems, access points, location selection, target areas, casting techniques, knot tying, both artificial and live bait selection, how to bait a hook, hook removal, safety, and when to fish (time of day/time of year)
Day 3 (May 14th 9:00am-2:00 pm, Canoe Ky shop)
This portion of the class will be a float fishing trip guided by Canoe Kentucky. It will be a four hour paddle down the elkhorn creek with plenty of opportunities to practice the skills learned in the two previous portions of this class.
