Sale of Mounted Wildlife Registration

Effective January 3, 2014, and pursuant to 301 KAR 4:095, any person or entity may sell a mounted wildlife specimen in Kentucky, except as prohibited by federal law . A mounted wildlife specimen means:

  • A legally taken animal, including the head, cape, or the entire skin, mounted in a lifelike representation of the animal or any part thereof.
  • European mount in which the horns or antlers and the skull or a portion of the skull are mounted for display.

In addition, any nonprofit charitable, religious, or educational institution which has qualified for exemption pursuant to 26 U.S.C. 501(c)(3) may sell mounted wildlife specimens if the mounts have been donated, except as prohibited by federal law .

Important!

Every wildlife mount of the species below must be registered by the seller on the department’s website and the registration number must be affixed to the mount in a clear and legible manner prior to the sale.

Species Requiring Registration

  • Black Bear
  • Bobcat
  • White-tailed Deer
  • Elk
  • Wild Turkey

All other sales of mounted wildlife specimens for species not listed above do not require registration.

Examples of Wildlife Mounts that cannot be sold include waterfowl, songbirds, birds of prey, and federally threatened or endangered species
