Hook and Cook - Danville - Boyle County

This course will teach you the basics of catching and cleaning fish. Whether you are an experienced angler or a first-time fisherman, this course will teach you the skills and knowledge you need to get started in fishing.

Day 1 July 2nd, 5:30pm-8:30pm, Boyle County Cooperative Extension Office 

This portion includes, but is not limited to: Proper selection and use of cooking tools, cooking safety, recipes, proper food handling and storage techniques, fileting fish, food preparation, cooking, and food sampling.

Day 2 July 9th, 5:30pm-8:30pm, Boyle County Public Library  

The classroom portion covers basic concepts including fish identification, biology, knot tying, both artificial and live bait selection, how to bait a hook, hook removal, safety, when to fish (time of day/time of year), fish habitat, equipment, conservation, licensing/regulations,

Day 3 July 16th, 5:30pm-8:30pm Millennium Park 

This will be the fishing portion of the class. KDFWR will provide all the equipment and bait so participants can test out the newly acquired fishing skills.

Fishing 101 - Irvine - Estill County

This course will teach you the basics of catching fish. Whether you are an experienced angler or a first-time fisherman, this course will teach you the skills and knowledge you need to get started in fishing.

Day 1 June 24th, 6:30pm - 8:00pm, Estill County Public Library

The classroom portion covers basic concepts including fish identification, basic equipment, licensing/regulations, knot tying, both artificial and live bait selection and where to fish.

Day 2 June 28th, 4:00pm - 6:00pm Camp Burnamwood

The field portion of the class includes fishing at Camp Burnamwood, all equipment and bait will be provided. Participants are welcome to bring their own fishing equipment.

The classroom portion covers basic concepts including fish identification, biology, fish habitat, equipment, conservation, improving water quality, licensing/regulations, proper selection and use of cooking tools, cooking safety, fish fileting techniques, recipes, proper food handling and storage techniques.

Day 2 June 10th, 5:30pm-8:30pm, Fayette County Cooperative Extension Office 

The field portion includes, but is not limited to: location selection, target areas, casting techniques, knot tying, both artificial and live bait selection, how to bait a hook, hook removal, safety, when to fish (time of day/time of year), fileting fish, food preparation and cooking, and food sampling.

Day 3 June 17th, 5:30pm-8:30pm Jacobson Park 

This will be the fishing portion of the class. KDFWR will provide all the equipment and bait so participants can test out the newly aquired fising skills.

Kayak Fishing 101 - Frankfort - Franklin County

Welcome to our beginner kayak fishing course! This course will teach you how to safely and effectively fish from a kayak. This course is designed for kayakers or anglers wanting to combine the two skills or someone new to both.

Day 1 (May 9th, 5:30pm- 8:30pm, KDFWR classroom)

This portion covers basic concepts including, but not limited to: fish identification, fish habitat, equipment,casting techniques, knot tying, both artificial and live bait selection, how to bait a hook, hook removal, safety, and when to fish (time of day/time of year), licensing and regulations. 

Day 2 (May 16th, 6:00pm- 830pm, KDFWR classroom)

The practical portion includes: loading and unloading a kayak, propelling and steering a kayak, weight distribution, how to secure gear, boat positioning for fishing and navigation of flowing water systems, access points, location selection and types of boats. 

Day 3 (May 18th 9:00am-1:00 pm, Canoe Ky shop)

This portion of the class is optional. It will be a float fishing trip guided by Canoe Kentucky pro staffers on Elkhorn Creek. Participants will be in their own boats with plenty of opportunities to practice the skills learned in the two previous portions of Kayak Fishing 101. Pro staffers will assist and offer tips and guidance. There is a fee associated with this portion of the class for kayak rental, shuttle and guides.

Fly Fishing 101 - Louisville - Jefferson County

Join us and learn the basics of fly-fishing including rod and reel setups, casting, fly types, basic gear, and knot tying. Attendees will have the opportunity to join a mentored fly-fishing trip. This class is free to attend, but you must have a valid Kentucky fishing license. All equipment is provided. This class is offered in partnership with Derby City Fly Fishers and The Parklands of Floyds Fork.

Wild Game Processing Demo at the Kentucky Elk and Outdoor Fest - Nelson County

Join the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources and the University of Kentucky's Cooperative Extension Services for wild game processing and wild game meat cooking demonstrations during the Kentucky Elk and Outdoor Fest at the KY Fish and Wildlife vendor booth. Learning the skills for processing small game will help you build the foundation for processing larger game like deer and elk. Enjoy a Cook Wild Kentucky venison recipe cooking demonstration with free samples thanks to our partners at UK's Cooperative Extension Services. The first 50 people to register for each time slot will receive a free Field to Fork cutting board when they check in at the demonstration! There are two opportunities to catch this demonstration throughout the day. Attendees are welcome to register for and attend both demonstrations but will only receive one Field to Fork cutting board for the day.
